Exponents and Roots

Plain-English guides to powers, square roots and cube roots, with worked examples you can check on the calculator.

What Are Exponents and Roots?

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number by itself: 7² = 7 × 7 = 49. A root works backwards: the square root of 49 is 7, and the cube root of 64 is 4, because 4 × 4 × 4 = 64.

In short: Exponents multiply a number by itself; roots undo that. Start with our guide to square roots and cube roots, then check any answer with the √ and ∛ keys on the CalcSolver calculator.
