What Does 3/4 Mean?
The fraction 3/4, read as “three quarters (three fourths)”, means three of four equal parts. It is the fraction you see on a fuel gauge, a measuring cup and a clock at quarter to the hour.
The top number, 3, is the numerator: how many parts you have. The bottom number, 4, is the denominator: how many equal parts make one whole. A fraction bar also means “divided by”, so 3/4 is the same as 3 ÷ 4. That is the key to converting it.
How to Convert 3/4 to a Decimal
Method 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator
Divide 3 by 4. Because 3 is smaller than 4, the answer starts with 0 and a decimal point, and you bring down zeros:
- 30 ÷ 4 = 7, remainder 2
- 20 ÷ 4 = 5, remainder 0
The remainder is 0, so the division stops: 3/4 = 0.75.
Method 2: Make the denominator a power of 10
Multiply the top and bottom by the same number so the denominator becomes 10, 100 or 1000. Here 4 × 25 = 100, so 3/4 = (3 × 25)/(4 × 25) = 75/100 = 0.75. The number of zeros in 100 tells you the number of decimal places.
In short: Divide 3 by 4. 3/4 = 0.75, a terminating decimal.
How to Convert 3/4 to a Percent
Method 1: Convert to a decimal, then multiply by 100
Take the decimal and multiply by 100, which moves the decimal point two places to the right: 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
Method 2: Multiply by 100 first, then divide
Multiply the numerator by 100 and divide by the denominator: 3 × 100 = 300, and 300 ÷ 4 = 75%. Because 4 × 25 = 100, you can also write 3/4 = 75/100 directly.
Method 3: Use the value of one part
Each 1/4 is worth 25%. You have 3 of those parts, so 3/4 = 3 × 25% = 75%. This is the fastest way to work out any fraction with a denominator of 4 in your head.

In short: Multiply 3/4 by 100: 3/4 = 75%.

Is 3/4 More Than Half?
Yes. 3/4 = 75%, which is more than 50%. The part that is left over is 1/4, which is 25%, because 75% + 25% = 100%.
How to Convert the Decimal or Percent Back to 3/4
Write the decimal over a power of 10, then simplify. 0.75 has 2 decimal places, so 0.75 = 75/100. Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common factor, 25: 75 ÷ 25 = 3 and 100 ÷ 25 = 4. So 0.75 = 3/4.
From the percent: 75% = 75/100. Simplify the fraction.

Common Mistakes When Converting 3/4
- Writing 3/4 as 0.34. Divide 3 by 4: the answer is 0.75.
- Dividing the wrong way round. 3/4 means 3 ÷ 4, not 4 ÷ 3. 4 ÷ 3 = 1.333333…, which is more than 1.
- Forgetting to multiply by 100. 0.75 is the decimal. The percent is 100 times bigger: 75%.
- Moving the decimal point the wrong way. To go from decimal to percent, move it two places to the right.
